Floods have lasting effects on homeowners

South Kitsap experienced record rain and flooding last week. If your home was flooded, it's important to heed this advice.

From the Kitsap Peninsula Business Journal

As record rainfall and dangerous high waters begin to dissipate, many residents are left battling for their health and home. “During a flood clean-up, residents need to be aware of their home’s indoor air quality,” said Ernie Bogue, owner of the Aire Serv of Kitsap County franchise. “Standing water in homes, particularly in the heating and cooling system, can become a breeding ground for contaminants and microorganisms. It’s important to remove the water and lower humidity levels quickly to prevent health risks.”

Aire Serv of Kitsap County recommends these tips, if residents fall victim to water damage:

Do not use your heating or cooling system if they were under water. Contaminants from the flood water may be blown into your home.

Have a professional heating and cooling provider clean or hose out ventilation ducts before using the air conditioner or furnace.

Removing water quickly by a professional helps prevent health risks and long term structural damage.

Watch for a musty odor. This can be a signal that there is growth of microorganisms.
Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and never use anything with an open flame or internal combustion engine indoors. This includes gas-powered generators, lanterns and camp stoves.

Discard water-damaged air filters.

Do not use a vacuum cleaner.

Hang drapes on coat hangers so they don’t touch the wet carpet or floor air distribution vents.

Call a heating and cooling service professional immediately to clean, dry and recondition your air system before damage and bacterial growth can occur. Also be sure to call an IICRC certified restoration professional for your home’s structural integrity.
