One of the people (Dagmar) working in the meat department asked if she could help. I told her what I was looking for (organic, local)--she said there was nothing matching those criteria in the store. We chatted a bit about what I'd learned--she said that in Germany, where she was from, nearly all food is local. Then she introduced me to William, the head butcher. William (who also had not yet seen this film but promised to do so) told me that Safeway used to sell organic beef but no longer does so because shoppers didn't buy it. Too expensive. Further, he admitted that he had no idea where his beef comes from, but "it's all processed in the USA."
That's the problem! The beef processed in the USA is the beef that's being documented in Food, Inc.
OK. I believe that the big food corporations are messing with my food. I don't want to eat it any more. I want to eat locally grown products, and organic if at all possible. There's the solution.
But that solution leads to the next problem: where can I find locally grown organic food outside of Whole Foods and farmers markets? Do I just give up and follow my colleague Pat's philosophy that "something's gonna kill us anyway"?
After awhile I gave up and bought a large cup of soup. Filling, but . . . .
Any thoughts?
